New Release: Pavel Dovgal/Ta-Ku – Finest Ego| Faces Series Vol.1

We’re a little bit late on this release, but it’s just too good a discovery not to share with you guys. Two of the most seasoned beatmaker collectives came together this summer to put out the first volume of a fresh new producer series entitled ‘Faces’. Every edition showcases two different producers from the hubs of PROJECT: Mooncircle (Mike Gao, Long Arm, fLako) and Finest Ego (Om Unit, Floating Points, Dorian Concept), with unique cover artwork for each artist designed by the aspring LNY, ‘known for his surrealistic portraits, blending humans and animals’. This first volume brings together Russian-born Pavel Dovgal and Ta-Ku, who has Philippine roots and grew up in Australia. The cultures they’ve grown up in are worlds apart, and through this they bring their own unique blend of music; Pavel Dovgal’s Kiss Purple sparking future-garage pads alight with some up-tempo snaps and claps, whilst Ta-Ku’s Confessions features John Robinson aka Lil’ Sci (Scienz Of Life) flowing smoothly over some J Dilla/Madlib inspired production. You can listen to the full 8 tracks here.

Live Review: Azealia Banks @ Hoxton Square, London – 6 November

“I’m a bit nervous, y’all a good looking crowd.” Despite this shy admittance (modesty being an uncommon trait in Hip-hop), Azealia Banks has little to fear. Beginning entirely acapella, her flow is seamless and visceral; she barks and bites whilst retaining an alluring coyness that’s utterly compelling. The beats are predominantly minimal, almost tribal, full of bitter wit…

New Artist: ASAP Rocky

Hitting the scene a couple of months ago, Harlem rapper ASAP Rocky has emerged, and he’s growing as fast as Odd Future did all that time ago. It’s easy to draw this comparison because of the in-built ASAP Mob production team, low pitch voices, futuristic Hip-hop beats and constant use of “swag”, but it doesn’t quite sum Rocky up…

New Artist: Kids These Days

Kids These Days are a bubblingly fresh and talented live Hip-Hop group peddling straight out of Chicago town, following seemlessly in the same soundsteps as one other Chicago windstorm, Kanye West. Their music is spilling over with Soul and Jazz influences – comprised of live horns and a blues-rock trio – their production is consistently rich in melody and harmony…

New Release: Skittles – Dot2Dot

Manchester MC Skittles appeared with a bang when he featured on Camo & Krooked’s release The Lesson that went viral last month. It has provided a strong platform for the solo release of Dot2Dot, which has a more modest production but is still too good to ignore…

New Artist: The Internet

A few months ago Odd Future announced that a new group, The Internet, had been born into their camp of madly talented wolves. Comprised of Syd Tha Kyd (the group’s live DJ and sound engineer) on vocals and Matt Martian on production, they seem to be skating down yet another musical path that I can only describe as ‘Odd Future RnB’…
