Jean Grae – SFSC

Emotionally seductive is just one of many ways to describe the stunning new #5 EP released earlier this month by Jean Grae; and you are completely forgiven for being caught off guard by this one. The short but extremely sweet project, which sees Jean sidestep her more familiar rapping exploits, exudes attitude from its tenacious production and arrangement right through to Grae’s ever impudent lyricism, but it’s her silken yet raw vocals delivered with adept control that really steal the show.

Illustrated fully in our standout, ‘SFSC’ is a stripped back number with dreamlike chords and an unforgiving kickdrum thud, upon which Grae lays delicate echoing vocals. Whilst with the others it would sit nicely in that bedroom playlist, ‘SFSC’ incites emotive resonance when Grae talks of being ‘caught in between hope and a dream’ or of how she has ‘come to deathly fear’ the morning rays. We can’t get enough of the EP, and hope that it’s just a scratching of the surface of Jean Grae’s new direction. Grab a copy of #5 EP from Jean’s Bandcamp here.
