We’re big fans of NTS mainstay and Whities label head Tasker, so when he declared an unreleased track to be “the best tune I’ve heard this year“, our ears pricked up. The song in question was ‘The Beacon’ by neinzer and, after we are lucky enough the premiere it before its release on Yumé Records.
‘The Beacon’ is a driving techno tour-de-fource, slowed down to a chugging 118bpm to give it a true heads-down sensibility. The use of round bass notes and heavily filtered piano chords is reminiscent of a slomo take on DVS1’s majestic ‘Black Russian’. However, neinzer’s employment of an apocalyptic vocal monologue and the song’s killer blow – those flickering synths that are present from the breakdown onwards – make his interpretation of these techno tropes stand alone.
