Jesse – Emotion #1

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard Paul Simon on a house record. The first time was Âme’s Private Edit of ‘Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes‘ and the second was in DJ Sprinkles’ ‘Reverse Rotation‘, where he samples the opening drums from ‘50 Ways To Leave Your Lover‘. Although ‘Emotion #1’ doesn’t directly lift any of Simon’s original music, you can clearly hear the influence he has had on Jesse‘s work, a disco-formatted, world-fusion with hints of Finnish-Prog-Rock.

It’s hard to ignore that Pastorius-esque bass playing from Finnish producer Eero Johannes, fretless and soaked in chorus very similar to Bakithi Kumalo’s playing on ‘Graceland‘. The groove is so good, that it can be repeated for six whole minutes without too much difficulty. With slight ambient alterations added, along with incredible production and performance, this track transcends most of the technical inputt that you usually find in dance music. This is a huge call back to the 70s and early 80s that never ever gets boring.

‘Emotion #1’ is taken from Jesse’s Music For Emotions EP, out now on Haista Records. The vinyl is currently in stock at Clone and Discogs Marketplace.
