Premiere: Cheap Present – What I Want

Under various guises and sounds, we’ve been following the progress of Luis Cran-Lawrence for a number of years. The Melbourne producer first popped on our radar as one half of Zanzibar Chanel, supplying the idiosyncratic rhythms to match Zac’s effervescent frontmanning. He’s also shined on his own, as Luis CL, featuring twice for Superconscious Records and Big Doint, traversing techno, classic 90s throwback, ghetto house and the more aerated sounds associated with Australia’s musical capital. The Glamoratz, a newly formed group debuting an EP for Public Possession, sits in similar outsider territory as ZC and feeds into yet another project in Cheap Present.

Keeping it close to home, Luis teams up with Glamoratz partner E.NV for a mini LP titled Anterior. Following up a series of cassette releases on This Thing and Confort35 Tapes together it sees the return of Luis to Superconscious and the six tracks display a similar penchant for wonky dance floor movers as label heads Francis Inferno Orchestra and Fantastic Man. We’ve gone for probably the most conventional house track to premiere; no criticism whatsoever, more a mark of the versatility the pair bring to Anterior, from post-punk to new wave and Chicago house. Another unique line in the sand along an eccentric career for Luis CL that defies pattern or prediction.
