Last year saw the much-needed reissue of Iury Lech’s balearic classic, Musica Para El Fin De Los Cantos, on Cocktail d’Amore. Recorded by the Ukrainian artist in Barcelona between 1989 and 1990, the album is a masterclass in ambient textures and sun-kissed sound design. Not content with simply making this work available to us again, the label has announced a remix EP, featuring reinterpretations by Powder, Suzanne Kraft, Hatchback and Zavoloka.
Powder made her debut on the label last year with H, a record inspired by CockTail d’Amore’s Berlin party in 2015, and she now returns to rework album highlight, ‘Barreras’, into a tripping house jam. She underpins the track with a simple but driving rhythm section, consisting just of a four-to-the-floor kick offset by syncopated sub-bass, a subtle mid-range snare, claves a shaker and occasional smatterings of percussion. Rhythmic propulsion also comes with elements from the original track, ambient pads and bells transformed with a stutter effect, more and less recognisable samples layered into a collage of swirling balearic atmospheres.
Musica Para El Fin De Los Cantos: Reinterpretaciones is out 5th March – buy from Juno and Phonica.
