Oneman’s Solitaire Vol. 1 Tour @ The Croft, Bristol – 16th February 2013
News that Oneman was in a car crash and had to miss his Birmingham show had us worried. Not for long though, as it was soon clear that he was okay and would be at The Croft. And boy was he there.
Mr Oneman is an extremely busy man: he hosts a weekly radio show on Rinse FM, started up his own record label 502, has curated the FabricLive64 mix as part of their esteemed series (and countless more mixes and compilations) and is forever popping up at DJ sets round the country. His latest treat is a free mixtape entitled Solitaire Vol. 1, his first unaffiliated release. Described as “a statement of intent for what’s to come…expect a melting pot of stripped back UK club jams and US rap in typical Oneman fashion with a couple of classics thrown in for good measure, plus exclusive guest features and collaborations, some of which will drop ahead of release”. Have a listen below.
“For what’s to come” no doubt referred to the extensive UK and Europe tour that the South Londoner is in the midst of and one of his stop-offs was Bristol’s The Croft. He was joined by Jon Rust, Reecha and Asbo, his Standard Place comrades, who together have established a name for themselves as one of London’s leading underground party purveyors. This set the tone for what was to come.
The jam-packed line up supplied us with lots of House-orientated treats, but it was the sheer variety of Oneman’s selections, from Biggie to Hudson Mohawke, that made his set so enjoyable. The Croft was an unusual but very fitting backdrop; the atmosphere was electric and the stage allowed a clear view of Oneman and his track selection skills. He took us on a journey from mellow to hype, and made it a night to remember.
Thanks to Louis Butler for helping with the review as well.
