Christopher Rau has an uncanny ability to create house music that inspires, saddens and rejuvenates all at the same time. His most effective work has the melancholy of Larry Heard but with a European touch that prevents him becoming a tribute act.
On ‘Lodjec’ from his new album on Money $ex Records, it only takes ten seconds for some familiar Rau comfort with pensive synth chords steadily emerging. They remain the main focus of its five minutes, interspersed with flute trills, far-off bassline strains (it would’ve been nice to see them emerge a touch more, if we’re bing fussy) and a weighty kick. Simple arrangement for a contemplative late night moment.
