Last month Fabric‘s year-old label Houndstooth announced the debut album of Brixton-based producer Throwing Snow. During that time we did a bit of research and found that Mr. Snow (aka Ross Tones) has a degree in astrophysics, which is not only mind-blowing but also evidence for his spaced-out sound that draws influences from a vast array of genres including dubstep, UK funky, house, break-beat and post-rock.
Much to our excitement, the 11-track LP Mosaic has just been released, and we’re loving what we’re hearing. Middle Eastern loops, oriental bells, speaker-shaking bass-lines, a ghostly selection of vocals (courtesy of Adda Kaleh, Kid A, Py, Jassy Grez and more) and twitchy dancefloor rhythms.
One of the most stand-out tracks for us is the IDM tipped All The Lights, that harks back to the insanely complex drum-programming of artists like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. Dreamy vocals from Russell Morgan are paired with glitchy amen break-beats that skip around frantically trying to outrun themselves.
Hypnotise featuring Kid A is another highlight for us; combining intricate melodies and syncopated rhythms that extend the track’s consumption to both home/headphone listening and peak time in a club.
What’s more, Throwing Snow has kept things interesting from the music to the artwork. A secret gem has been discovered within the artwork of Mosaic, which can only be found using the Layar app on your mobile phone. Download it from the app store and hold it up to the cover art of the album to witness the very cool surprise for yourself!
