Day 24 of our 2020 charity Advent Calendar, in aid of You Make It & Project Protect.
Holding titles including drummer, producer, musical director, studio manager and more, its no wonder Lewisham, South London’s Kwake Bass, is such an omnipresent influence in jazz, electronic, soul and leftfield music being produced in the capital, particularly it’s southern quarters. With a string of artists, already under ‘worked-with’ in his resume, as well as his label-come clothing line-come way of life – DEM 1NS; Kwake now co-runs studio/ rehearsal space Room Studios alongside Wu Lu providing more to his community.
Today’s track is a spaced-out head-nodding hip hop instrumental, with dubbed registers, hypnotic phasers and multi-temporal pad word.
“This is an excerpt from an experiment with my current solo rig. The beat is all played live with controllers set up to respond to the improv going on within the drums, as my brother biscuit says- MATHS WITH SOUL!!!”
This year we’ve chosen to split profits from the release between two charities, both of whom are doing important work within their respective fields.
The first charity is London-based organisation You Make It, a creative programme that offers young women access to tools, networks and experiences — group learning, 1-1 mentoring, work experience, start-up support and 1-1 pastoral support — giving them the confidence to transform their lives through personal empowerment.
The second is Nigeria-based initiative Project Protect, a subdivision of Burna Boy’s charitable NGO The Reach, launched to help provide financial, medical and legal resources for EndSars protestors during and after the protests.
