Day 18: Rose Bonica – Untitled Flower Combo

Day 18 of our 2020 charity Advent Calendar, in aid of You Make It & Project Protect.

Cape Town’s Rose Bonica produces her own brand of dark, machine-welded electronica that pushes perception as she moulds influences into her basement club productions. She recently released her debut full length album Tears for the Tear Maker, on her newly formed Roses Are Red label, which will surely see here fully blosom.

Today she treats us to a heady banger of hard techno which opens up blissfully into an expansive melodic soundscape anchored by a driving rupturing beat.

“I made this track after months of feeling locked up and experiencing the ups and downs of an existential crisis. When I listen to the track I feel like I’m getting kicked from all sides, only to experience brief moments of relief and happiness and then be swung back into the chaos. I’m pretty sure this is how 2020 has felt for many people.”

This year we’ve chosen to split profits from the release between two charities, both of whom are doing important work within their respective fields.

The first charity is London-based organisation You Make It, a creative programme that offers young women access to tools, networks and experiences — group learning, 1-1 mentoring, work experience, start-up support and 1-1 pastoral support — giving them the confidence to transform their lives through personal empowerment.

The second is Nigeria-based initiative Project Protect, a subdivision of Burna Boy’s charitable NGO The Reach, launched to help provide financial, medical and legal resources for EndSars protestors during and after the protests.
