Premiere: Cornelius Doctor & Tushen Raï – Salaam Sholay

Though sporadic in its output, London-based label Disco Hamam has proved that quality prevails over quantity. For more than a decade label boss Jonny Rock has enlisted contemporary producers to put their twist on forgotten sounds from Turkey and the Middle East.

For the sixth instalment he welcomes Japanese producer Hotaru and Radio Campus Besançon resident Red Lebanese alongside Cornelius Doctor and Tushen Raï, the duo behind Lyon-based party, imprint and collective Hard Fist.

Our pick comes from the latter pair who contribute two tracks to the VA, both originally released in 1984. While one reinterprets a kitsch electro hip-hop jam from Hungarian singer Mikky, the second, ‘Salaam Sholay’, is an edit of a psychedelic disco track from UK new beat trio West India Company that features several Indian vocalists from the south east of London.

Disco Hamam 6 will be released via Disco Hamam.
