Dubbed the ‘Golden Voice’ of Zanzibar, singer Siti Muharam continues the legacy of her famed great grandmother, the “mother of Taarab” Siti Binti Saad.
Though it was no easy feat for Muharam to follow in her footsteps, with the guidance of Matona, the album director behind her new LP Siti’s of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar) on On The Corner, she shared the singular music of her ancestors through her powerful timbre, lyricism and the percussive Kidumbak stylings practiced by her great grandmother.
A deeply personal record, while the album pays homage to Saad in its essence and groove, it reflects the mood and times of the present. Completed in just ten days, the project gave birth to a sound that speaks to a new generation but keeps the spirit of Siti Binti Saad alive.
Siti’s of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar) is out on 19th June via Bandcamp.
