Sandy B’s anthemic ‘Student Night’ sent shockwaves through a number of scenes after being licensed for reissue in 2017; its killer bassline and Sandy B’s staunch, staccato rapping was a fixture at clubs and festivals at the time. The global resonance his music had was keenly noted by Sandy himself. In conversation a couple years back, he touched on how special it was to see new audiences discovering his music, while he explicitly expressed his keenness to collaborate and how he was “very much open to working with new artists in Europe”. It’s fitting then that Harold Boué has reprised his Lion’s Drums alias for a remix of ‘Student Night’.
The Marseille-based producer lends a deft touch to vintage material, having remixed Manos Tsangaris’ percussive workout ‘Elephant’s Easy Moonwalk Through The Night‘ for CockTail d’Amore. On his edit of ‘Student Night’, Boué bolsters the original with a battery of percussion and writhing acid lines, transmogrifying the original’s kwaito groove into an acidic tribal house stomper.
