A shared love of dance music culture brought South London DJ and producer Maxwell Owin and lyricist Phoebs AKA Iron Dread together; an influence that the pair channel on their debut release ‘Come with the Ragga’, which also features the melodic expertise of Levitation Orchestra harpist Marysia Osuchowska.
Marking the inaugural transmission on Síbín – a newly-founded label and collective started by Maxwell and DJ, producer and radio host Anja Ngozi – the release, which comes as a two tracker with an OG version and another for the club, explores the space between soul and grime and calls on the pair’s diverse inspirations, from Phoebs’ razor sharp, evocative lyrics calling on influences like Lauryn Hill to Maxwell’s formative musical stimulants in soul, electronic music and early 00’s grime beats.
The collaboration follows a wealth of individual accolades for both Maxwell and Phoebs. The former breaking new musical ground in 2017 on his critically acclaimed outing with keys player Joe Armon-Jones, as well as producing for fellow SE artists like Oscar Jerome, Nubya Garcia and Coby Sey, and the latter for her work with Nanci Correia as ‘Nanci and Phoebe’ on Congo Natty’s label, and her solo movements under her Iron Dread moniker.
Come with the Ragga will be released on 23rd May via Síbín.
