Day 5 of our 2019 charity Advent Calendar, in aid of War Child.
Fela Kuti’s former musical director and a versatile London producer nearly 30 years his junior might not be the most obvious paring on paper. Together though, Dele Sosimi and Medlar have found an intriguing middle ground that marries afro beat rhythms with an off-kilter club sounds. Despite playing numerous gigs together, they’ve not yet gone public with any complete and mastered (shout out Stefano Ritteri) material, until this jungle workout.
“We agreed on one overriding theme/mantra for this collaborative project – to never be predictable. Our debut EP is due for release on Wah Wah 45s in early 2020. ‘Give It Up’ is a slow jam that turned into jungle, with some T-Pain esque vocal effects from Dele. Catch us at Oval Space NYE event with Gilles Peterson, Nu Guinea and Donna Leake.”
Our featured charity for 2019 is War Child, whose work in post-conflict zones is done a bit differently. They recognise humans need more than just food and shelter to flourish after a war, breaking the cycle that leads to repeated conflicts by giving them purpose, education and cultural enrichment.
The dance floor has long-since been a safe space for the displaced, marginalised and persecuted to find community and expression. Safe Spaces represent the core of War Child’s work, providing vital refuge for young people to play, learn and regain their childhood.
