Despite being synonymous with his ten-year-strong NDATL imprint, Kai Alce rarely uses it as a platform for his own solo work. Back In This Sh!t represents his first in over three years and is more than your usual soulful deep house fodder. Techno elements sneak in on the title track, vicious synth solos on ‘Not’ and MCDE-style shuffles on EP finisher ‘Jam Tight’. Our pick is ‘Sheed’s Move’, no doubt an ode to flautist Rasheeda Ali, whose ennobling work steals the show. Kai extends an invitation to listen to the full, unadulterated version if you buy the record, but in the meantime you can listen to the full-length version dubbed over with some personal touches.
