Described by Miles Davis as “the most impressive musician in the world”, Hermeto Pascoal has become a revered cultural icon in Brazilian musical history. A true maestro, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger, he has influenced generations of Brazilian musicians for over 40 years with compositions that shine through as fundamentals in Brazilian and Jazz music.
For Far Out Recordings 200th release, the imprint is presenting a previously unreleased album by Hermeto Pascoal and his ‘Grupo Vice Versa’: Viajando Com O Som (the lost ’76 Vice Versa Studio Sessions). Recorded in just two days in 1976, at Rogério Duprat’s Vice Versa Studios in São Paulo, the original master tape got lost over time, and has laid dormant and unplayed for over forty years.
With the tape rescued and restored, today we premiere a highlight track ‘Danca Do Paje’, a 9-minute shimmering psychedelic exploration through kaleidoscopic landscapes. Opening with freeform flutes, twinkling percussion and heavenly gliding keys, the track continues to build for 5 minutes before dropping into a forest groove of bird sounds, shuffle rhythm and spiritual vocals in line with majestic horns.
Far Out Recordings are throwing a launch party for the release on the 3rd November at Total Refreshment Centrre, with a live set from Sean Khan playing the music of Hermeto alongside DJ sets from Joe Davis all night. Head here for more info.
