Not many artists begin a career in music singing the blues and diversify into house in later years and fewer still can say this renaissance is powered by their offspring. Rick Poppa Howard has his son Tevo to thank for the production and release of much of his output since 2008. This period has yielded a modest five EPs but all worth savouring thanks to Tevo’s jacking Chicago style mixed with Rick’s vocals, which sound as natural a collaboration as Mr White and Larry Heard.
For their latest release, Keep Holdin On, they team up with Marcel Vogel‘s Intimate Friends imprint. ‘Gimme That Love’ begins with enough squelch to be fooled for a Phuture production but soon tunnels skyward and takes its first breath with Rick’s vocal refrains to “gimme love”. It’s hard to ignore further Chicago and Trax Record connections as shimmering pads enter with the same melodic impact as some of Virgo Four’s best work; like ripples in a pond twinkling in the moonlight. A real coup for Vogel, coming fresh off the back of other EPs from Soulphiction and Karizma on sister label Lumberjacks in Hell.
Keep Holdin On EP is out 24th July – buy from Juno.
