Australia has been producing some of the finest tunes to reach international shores and ears in recent years, from the jazz-soul stylings of Hiatus Kaiyote, to Harvey Sutherland’s hardware disco, Andy Hart’s dancefloor motivators, and Silent Jay & Jace XL’s woozy mixtape R&B. Now, the five-piece group The Possé add to the cultural exports with their latest EP, Season’s Greetings.
Founded by Sydney stalwarts Andrew Elston – a.k.a boogie producer Physique – and Omar producer Ross Ferraro, the group brings a live approach to the synthesised sounds of the club. Following last year’s debut EP, Our Thing, their latest for the ever-reliable Ken Oath is a tropically-infused, groove-laden house number. Building on the foundations of twinkling Rhodes chords and the rhythmic persistence of bongos and congas, electric drums soon come to the fore, bolstered by the funk buzz of a Juno 6 and the squelchy, amorphous acid bass of a TB-303. The looped melody brings you poolside, via the Hacienda, and will be a sure dose of sunshine all summer long, regardless of the weather outside.
Ken004 is out 28th July – buy from Red Eye. The EP was mastered by Dave Cooley, who was also responsible for Dilla’s Donuts and the Madvillainy LP.
