The elusive Hanna has been exuding a brand of silky, jazz-sampled US deep house for a nearly twenty years now. Releasing on Sound Signature, his tracks have long been making the rounds thanks to DJs like Kyle Hall, Theo Parrish and Kai Alcé.
His next release also signals the launch of new upstart Waella’s Choice, a label run by our own Aaron L alongside Andy Lemay (Dimensions Festival) and Will Edge (commune). In Hanna’s own words, the four tracks on Bounce EP “help us return to an elegant way of life” and kicks off with ‘Stranger’. A clear-as-day Warren Harris production, it combines signature Rhodes with vocals from Alyson Faith, matched with a chopped up acoustic guitar and flute trills, painting a quintessential hazy pinkness in the listener’s mind. It’s already received two plays from Gilles Peterson on back-to-back BBC 6Music shows and endorsed by him as “future emotive soul music”.
The EP follows last year’s long player, Bless on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature and is quite the baptism for Waella’s Choice. This isn’t the first 001 entry Hanna has contributed to, but for any label no matter how experienced, a producer of his caliber is the formative start one could hope for.
Bounce EP is out 2nd June – pre-order vinyl and digi from Bandcamp. Follow Waella’s Choice on Facebook and Soundcloud to be the first to hear more tracks from the EP. Artwork designed by Nick Cobby, inspired by Warren’s love for American painter Cy Twombly.
