Premiere: Afriquoi – Starship (Hector Plimmer Remix)

One of the surprise packages of Q1 2017 was Hector Plimmer’s debut album Sunshine, on Alberts Favourites. Not for its quality – something that seems to have come naturally for the South London producer in just a handful of releases – but for its far-reaching impact. An accomplished but unashamedly modest project from a young label caught the eye of Gilles Peterson (6Music Album of the Week) and FACT (Against The Clock) to elevate Plimmer above a congested pool of contenders in the capital.

Still riding that considerable wave, he lends his efforts to Wormfood and One House Records, remixing Afriquoi for a Record Store Day release. Soaring melodies, far-off ravey piano stabs and Shabaka Hutchings’ reverbed sax form the foundation, descending Afriquoi’s diasporic African sound into deep electronic territories.

Starship / Can I Know You EP is out 21st April on Wormfood & One House Records – buy from Bandcamp. Afriquoi’s next headline show is at Mangle, London on 21st April. Hector Plimmer’s Sunshine LP is out now.
