Bristol based all-female record label Saffron Records have teamed up with all-round industry-centred music course provider dBs Music to launch their new immersive music production and sound engineering course. Saffron For Sound is a six week course offered to women between 16 -25 years, making use of dBs Music’s world class studios, aiming to dismantle and deconstruct the gender stereotypes prevalent in electronic music.
Saffron Records Creative Director, Laura Lewis-Paul expanded for us on the projects origins stressing the importance of one of its objectives being not just to change perceptions of the by helping to produce more self-producing artists, but to work towards changing the industry structurally.
“We feel it is important for people to have different options when booking a recording session or thinking of a producer to work with. At the moment the offer is pretty one dimensional, so we want to work towards a more diverse approach.” Thereby working to build “a community of like minded young women” to build “a path for the next generation” providing that visual representation will go a long way to doing this.
Now in the final stretch of their first round of courses for 2017, Laura was also kind enough to share a little of her first-hand experience of the course so far:
“My work is so often about providing creative opportunities for young people, so taking part in the course has been a really interesting process for me, especially as I have not been in a learning environment since university. The music production course has really changed my outlook on sound, especially everyday sounds like the the tube or when you overhear someones conversation, everything becomes a potential for the music making process. I have a very eclectic taste in music, so that made it difficult to choose my style of music without it being all over the place! Alas I have found my style… watch this space!”
