Day 23: Harvey Sutherland – First Swim [Outtake Jam]

Day 23 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of The Steve Reid Foundation.

It’s been a vintage year for Harvey Sutherland, building on previous success as a solo artist with releases for MCDE, Voyage and Echovolt and forming his own live band, The Bermudas.

Earlier this summer, we caught up with him to record an improv session at the Secretsundaze Studios in London and for our Advent Calendar he’s donated one of the outtakes. Harking back to his brooding 2014 work Q3, ‘First Swim [Outtake Jam]’ stays clear from his jazzier, more funk-driven productions over the last couple of years. Commanding the Rhodes piano and a Jen SX-1000 synthesiser in the studio, he conjures up an atmospheric and brooding eight minutes; a moment of reflection to a late night dance floor or an injection of energy to a basement warm-up.

Download ‘First Swim’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all proceeds going to The Steve Reid Foundation, a charity founded by Gilles Peterson that aims to support musicians in dedication to the visionary jazz drummer. Watch the studio session in full.
