The launch of Piff Records has felt like a long time coming. Their party with Roy Davis Jr in 2011 was one of my proper tastes of Bristol nightlife – dressing up as a smurf at the now-departed Syndicate notwithstanding – and was also my first introduction to one of our residents Harri Pepper. Piff has taken many twists and turns since that date, but arrives at its first release with understandable excitement, looking to three Australians to smash the champagne bottle over the bow.
Adelaide duo Warren Raww follow up a storming debut on Manchester’s Natural Sciences, with To Adelaide EP, containing two of their own and one each from compatriots Arthur Miles and Freddie Norwood. ‘Neightbours’ is our pick, the more serene of their two offerings. Starting off with tender piano chords and percussion that sounds like a receipt being processed, a languid bassline and aqueous squelches are added to the claps to recall Kyle Hall’s recent From Joy album and much of Lobster Theremin’s Distant Hawaai output. The echoes of a receipt might be present but there’s no need for a returns policy on this debut from Piff, as they march boldly into a new phase.
To Adelaide EP is out late November – pre-order vinyl or digital from Bandcamp.
