Matthew Herbert is an essential name and pioneer of leftfield house, who has shown deep innovation in all of his own productions through his Herbert moniker. With a huge output of remix work, to add to an extensive catalogue, the enigmatic artist is always pushing boundaries.
With new productions and edits surfacing regularly, it’s difficult to keep up with his rapid flow of releases, which provides elements of discovery to his music. As an affiliate of London based label Hypercolour, Herbert has featured in their household lineups, and has offered a remix and licensed track on previous releases and now debuts original work on their tenth anniversary compilation with his latest effort, ‘Downgrade’.
Playful vocals sit above murky percussion that creates a style of foggy house, that persists to shroud the track with darkness, but Herbert breathes life back in at the right moments with teasing arcade game synths. This will certainly be a stand-out on a strong Hypercolour compilation that also includes FaltyDL, Luke Vibert, DMX Krew, Roman Flügel and Matt Karmil. A great entry for new Herbert listeners and another solid indulgence for fans.
Hypercolour 10 Years is released on 11th November – pre-order from their website.
