Proclaimed as Nigeria’s ‘Sound President’, Odion Iruoje is one of those prolific figures that you wouldn’t know anything about if it wasn’t for reissue labels like Soundway Records. Credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria, Iruoje produced all of Fela’s revolutionary early material from 1970-73, and it makes perfect sense when you hear his own music.
Recorded in 1983, Odion’s Down To Earth LP is his only record – part disco, part Nigerian rap, Afro-funk & Juju – a unique blend of Nigerian music that certainly deserves another look after all these years.
Today we premiere our favourite track off the repress, ‘Ikebe’, fusing West African funk and highlife guitar riffs with jazzy grooves and unique Nigerian vocals bound to warm up a dance floor. Rich horns ring out, reminding us of endless Fela textures that Odion himself was responsible for. Treat this as a go-to body mover for the summer.
Down To Earth is out on 180g vinyl on the 19th August via Soundway Records. It will be limited to 1000 copies only, so get on the pre-order now.
