Dutch producer Makam enjoys a close relationship with Dekmantel, having released multiple times on the label and regularly appearing on their club and festival lineups. For his next project on the label he is prepping a full-length album entitled Than Sadet, his second after 2010’s How Long Is Now on Sushitech Purple. Before this drops, the label are releasing a two track sampler to whet listeners’ appetites, and here we premiere the A-side ‘Riding High’ in full.
‘Riding High’ is a lush piece of Floating Points-esque crescendoing house music, representing a change in direction for Makam who is usually known for a more upfront jacking approach. Built on a chugging beat, the keys are pulled in and out of the foreground of the mix to build and sustain tension while tentatively keeping its climax just out of reach. Makam’s skilful adoption of this new style is hugely promising for the album, and with the Dekmantel store claiming “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet” we are eager to uncover the rest of the results.
Makam’s Than Sadet Sample EP is out 20th June. Pre-order the vinyl from Dekmantel’s website, and catch Makam playing Dekmantel Festival on 5th August.
