Adored for his DJ sets, respected for his sample-centric productions, Danilo Plessow AKA Motor City Drum Ensemble has become a deity among disco lovers around the world. Here however, Plessow shows us a different side to his abilities. His remix for Gilles Peterson’s Havana Club project sits among contributions by Max Graef & Glenn Astro, Pepé Bradock and Al Dobson Jr., but stands out as a one of our highlights. Its sly bassline teases something that remains a secret, enigmatic for the duration of the track. A slow thudding kick keeps time, referencing Plessow’s club background, despite the jazzy remix sounding a world away from the floor. The space-age synths toy and tangle with each other over softer keys. The whole track has a very Floating Points feel to it, able to combine the worlds of dance, jazz and rumba to create something novel and authentic.
