Day 9: The Milk – Trouble Gonna Bring Me Down (Tall Black Guy Remix)

Day 9 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of Help Musicians.

Nearly four years ago, Tall Black Guy became only our second Stamp Mix guest, back when he was a young, beatmaking upstart from Detroit, getting props for his Fela Kuti rework. Fast forward to 2015 and the big man’s stature has grown to match his size, fuelled by hip-hop productions squeezed through a jazz and soul juicer.

His contribution to our 2015 Advent Calendar is a collaboration with The Milk, the Essex four-piece who recently penned their sophomore album for WahWah45s, a release born through re-engaging with their love for Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes and the Isley Brothers. Unsurprisingly, it oozes soul and was recently named one of 6Music’s albums of 2015. It’s a project that’s primed for a TBG rework then, and his take on ‘Trouble Gonna Bring Me Down’, tows the line between Dilla, Slum Village and A Tribe Called Quest; not so much emulating the sampling greats by chopping the original up, but respecting the prime cut that The Milk have already provided.

Download Tall Black Guy’s remix from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all donations going to Help Musicians, a charity that supports musicians in times of crisis.

The Milk – Favourite Worry LP is out now on WahWah45s. Buy from Bandcamp.
