Day 6: Owiny Sigoma Band – Odiambo Odoor Obiendo

Day 6 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of Help Musicians.

Owiny Sigoma Band is a collective of musicians unified by two contrasting cultures. The bass, drums and keys are provided by three Londoners, whilst the distinctive African influence and the majority of the vocals are provided by Kenyan natives Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, who are masters of the Nyatiti lyre and traditional Luo percussion respectively.

The band’s unique fusion of modern electronic music with traditional Kenyan Benga stands apart from anything we’ve come across before in the ‘world music’ bracket, and coupled with support from Brownswood Recordings‘ head-honcho Gilles Peterson, the band have released three spectacular albums to date.

Today, we’re pleased to offer you ‘Odiambo Odoor Obiendo’, an exclusive track from the latest Nyanza LP that only helps to ratify the beauty of the working partnership between these two styles. 808 claps and cosmic effects provide the backing track, whilst distinct African vocals and an upbeat riff dominate throughout, making for an immersive and almost psychedelic listening and dancing experience.

Download ‘Odiambo Odoor Obiendo’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all donations going to Help Musicians, a charity that supports musicians in times of crisis.
