The latest release on Money $ex Records continues to proliferate the label’s holy trinity of jazz, hip-hop and house. This time hosted by Cologne’s Hodini – along with the usual suspects (Max Graef, Glenn Astro, Damiano von Erckert) – the 8 tracker continues on the line originally drawn out by the label heads with its MPC mashing, swishy swashy hi-hats and river-like organ sounds.
Flanked by Graef and von Erckert, ‘Pepatzenimfernbus‘ is our standout (it was a hard decision). With its soft Rhodes, sax play-offs and Graefy hats, it swims around the occasional vocal sample just before the ‘Outreux‘ of the record. The keyboard playing on this track (and in fact most Money $ex tracks involving keys) is superb, the chords always surprise and their placements within the bar are clearly from someone who knows about curating serious rhythm.
It’s amazing how distinctive this label has become, everything sounding completely Money $ex or completely Dilla. This is the third release from the label in only its first year, planting a formidable state of consistent quality for itself. If you’re not already, you should be watching this space for more from Money $ex Records.
