It’s been a strong 18 months for Danish imprint Tartelet Records; showcasing a constant stream of high quality releases along with Max Graef‘s stand out debut LP Rivers of the Red Planet. Moving forward, this month the label present some deep and soulful Papuan flavoured sounds from new artist Nu Guinea; with an EP title and artwork that suggest influences as global as their own name.
‘Bougainvilles Live’ gets things rolling with an array of tribal percussion seemingly suited to the aforementioned island. Building on this, a funked out acid synth line intermixed with a lo-fi lead gives it a Far East feel which compliments it’s Afro-centric elements.
‘Nu World (Vocal Edit)’ and ‘Exotica Dance Club’ ramp up the 80’s funk with infectious basslines and echoey flute trills that evokes the same dreaminess found on 80’s Japanese disco records. On the former, the vocal “I’ve been around the world” nods to the record’s eclectic influences, but its omission in the alternative ‘Flute Mix’ edit lifts the track even more, adding further flute melodies in it’s place. Lastly, ‘Outro’ brings you back down to earth with a beatless assortment of broody pads and pulsating LFO’s, acting as a therapeutic warm down.
Overall, World EP does give off a sense of a record well travelled, building on Latin, Afro and Asian influences all laced with an air of analogue funk that will sit nicely alongside the rest of Tartelet’s catalogue.
World EP is available to purchase on vinyl now over at OYE-Records. The EP will be available to buy on digi download later next month.
