Risen through the ranks of the Red Bull Music Academy, recent graduate Shintaro Haioka, brings us a spacious piece of bass meditation from his debut album, From Ash Hill, forthcoming on the German Emerald & Doreen imprint.
Being an active member of two Japanese electronic bands, Haioka’s solo productions keep that unique Japanese charm whilst clearly demonstrating the man’s firm grasp of modern minimal bass music. The result is unearthly yet soulful, and at times heart-aching.
Inspired by the earthquake of 2011, his music carries a similar tremor, both literally and figuratively speaking. Our featured track, ‘Ai’, is a fine example. Crackles in an abyss accompany remittent acoustic plucks that clear a path for the shuddering sub quakes. The spacious tension makes us think of it as a weightier, oriental take on some of Nicolas Jaar’s work, such as ‘Don’t Break My Love’.
