Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Mixtape, bringing you an hour of delectable grooves from around the world.
This week we have something extra special courtesy of four incredible artists injecting London with a dynamic range of fresh musical output. Since making the move from Australia to the UK, rising soul talent Jordan Rakei has been busy planting roots in the capital, coming together with sharp-witted rapper Barney Artist and forward-thinking producers Alfa Mist and Tom Misch to wax lyrical on all manner of musical topics in a new weekly podcast.
Launching roughly a month ago, their Are We Live Podcast series has seen a great response online, giving listeners an insightful look into their respective worlds as fast-rising artists. From astute discussions on the struggles of transitioning from Soundcloud to a wider audience, debates on the influence of J Dilla and critical analysis of Kendrick‘s new album, each episode provides stimulating dialogue between the four talents. Included each week are updates on their individual progression with current projects and the challenges that follow, as well as a chance for each artist to play out a song of their choice. Today they’ve extended that choice selection and provided 16 of their favourite tracks to ease you into this morning.
Expect 1970s Brazilian jazz, psychedelic soul from Hiatus Kaiyote and Thundercat, hip-hop cuts from Madlib and Mos Def plus grooves from Peckham’s Henry Wu and LA’s Taylor McFerrin.
