Preview: Jay Electronica at Exchange, Bristol

Jay Electronica Bristol

Where: The Exchange, Bristol
When: 11th March
Tickets: £20

It’s not often that rap royalty graces Bristol – there was no secret Kanye gig after the Brit Awards and no Watch the Throne tour date, most likely due to Bristol’s lack of arena space. Yet every cloud has a silver lining, and stars have come down the M4 to play in humble surroundings. Danny Brown played a memorably undersold gig at the Fleece, while Joey Bada$$ and The Game have recently given the Marble Factory some well-deserved relief from the steady 4/4. The latest gig listing however is the most welcome surprise we’ve seen yet.

The enigmatic Jay Electronica will be performing to only a crowd of only 300 at The Exchange in Bristol just a few days before his headline show at London’s KOKO. A rapper who has been on radars for nearly a decade now, he was the first signing to Erykah Badu’s label and had a full 90min podcast dedicated to him on Gilles Peterson’s Worlwide all the way back in 2008!

We can’t wait to see the man who gave us one of last year’s hip hop tracks of the year, and whose delayed album release on Jay Z’s Roc Nation puts even Jai Paul to shame. Word on the grapevine is that this tour will coincide with its release, but all hype aside, the chance to see the man in such intimate surroundings is one not to miss.

For the uninitiated, check him out on the Red Bull Music Academy sofa in London in 2010
