Being schooled and raised in Fela Kuti’s shadow at the height of early 70s afrobeat tends to have a knock-on effect, and much is the case for afrobeat ambassador Dele Sosimi. The Nigerian-British musician was still a young man when sharing Fela’s Glastonbury stage in 1984, and it wasn’t long after that he became Musical Director for both Fela’s Egypt 80 and Femi Kuti’s Positive Force.
Fast forward to 2015 and he’s signed to genre defying London label Wah Wah 45s, who are putting out his third album in May. Recorded at Fishmarket Studios in Willesden with analogue expert Nostalgia 77, the album was made the “Fela way” by Dele’s own direction, and the ‘Sanctuary (7″ edit)’ is a dazzling first taste.
Dele Sosimi will be playing an extended live show with his full size Afrobeat Orchestra on 27th February at BrixtonJAMM. Head here for more details.
