As we brave the icy temperatures out here in the UK, our Australian counterparts down-under are frolicking unclothed in the height of their summer. Usually we’d try to avoid even contemplating these weathered grievances but Melbourne-based Wondercore Island have made that near impossible by putting out their spectacular new ‘summer’ compilation (thanks for rubbing it in guys).
Now in it’s 5th edition, the mixtape series serves to showcase a comprehensive and diverse range of artists sprouting up in Australia and further afield. With a keen ear to the ground, previous mixtapes in the series have included Hiatus Kaiyote, Kirkis and Jordan Rakei long before they had extensive followings, and their new 21-track release is no different in uncovering rising talent.
The compilation covers future-beat sounds alongside experimental R&B, soul, hip-hop, house and jazz, and is freely downloadable over on Wondercore Island’s Bandcamp. You can check out the full mixtape over there, and listen to some of our personal favourites below:
Silentjay + Jace XL – Just Waking Up
Prequel – I Can Move
Taylor Crawford – Brahman
Nikolai – 7/4
Queen Magic – Bad Trip (I Love You)
