Day 17 of our Advent Calendar series has us uncovering an audio jewel we first championed back in 2011 from British-Ghanaian producer Black Pho3nix aka Larry Achiampong. Pulling dusty sounds from the West African records of his parents’ collection, Achiampong created a full-flavoured 23-track beat-tape sampling the warm and rich frequencies of unswept Highlife and fused it with a Madlibian approach to hip-hop.
‘GYE NYAME’ is a shining light from the LP, re-jigging the retro golden age sounds of his heritage with a fresh and exciting twist. Fuzzy guitar riffs, crispy organ keys and colourful vocal samples bounce to the groove of organic snaps and claps, a must-have winter warmer for your music collection.
Download ‘GYE NYAME’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay what you like, with any donations going to Tomorrow’s People, a charity helping the long-term unemployed back to work.
