Today’s calendar treat comes from jazz jewel Melanie De Biasio who gifts us with an alternate take of ‘Sweet Darling Pain’ taken from her 2014 album No Deal (nominated for the Album of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards). This version features De Biasio on the flute, which plays as pivotal a role as her voice. Its soft textures balance the harsher elements in the cymbals and piano, beautifully floating along to the rhythmical ebb and flow of the piece. Being lighter on the layers the track has an even more organic feel than the original, as if it were being played in the moment.
The No Deal Remix album is released on 27th Februrary on Play It Again Sam, featuring remixes from The Cinematic Orchestra, Jonwayne, Seven Davis Jr, Hex, EELS, Chassol, Clap! Clap! and Gilles Peterson himself. Melanie also performs at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards on the 17th January 2015, alongside Fatima, Bilal, Taylor McFerrin and Clap! Clap!
