Referencing the recently defunct drugs market Silk Road, it’s no wonder that Baltimore duo Silk Rhodes have been ‘tapping into’ such a unique blend of psychedelic soul. Their former ventures together include the equally punny Run DMT and Salvia Plath, but this time round they have the support of similarly spaced-out label Stones Throw Records.
Made up of producer Michael Collins and vocalist Sasha Desree, they first turned hip-hop heads when their glittery disco jam ‘Face 2 Face’ was included on the soundtrack to Stones Throw documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton. Building on that hype the duo released their first record ‘Pains’ in August, accompanied by some LSD blotter acid cover artwork in a nod to their own methods of working. Their new track ‘Realtime’ continues firmly in this fashion, with a stripped back soul groove painted by a gritty Fender Rhodes and vocals inspired by 90’s R&B heart-throb D’Angelo.
