Mim Suleiman has struck a note so true with her sound, and it is definitely all hers. Through expert production from Maurice Fulton, almost wounded, passionate vocals and shuffling traditional African rhythms from a mass of percussion, her Tanzanian dub disco (how good does that sound?) really does get you going. Ahead of her live date in Bristol tomorrow, we asked Mim to select a few tracks that have been an influence on her and her music: “This is some of the music that inspires me and moves my bones from the earth to the sky!!” We hear you.
Catch Mim tomorrow in Bristol for Hi Life Hi Fi, alongside a live band and Bass Clef in support. More info and tickets here.
Bi Kidude – Suhuba Ya Di
I grew up hearing her play like this in the island of Zanzibar. Sadly she passed away last year over 105 years of age and she was still performing. I was lucky enough to sing for her and chat two months before her passing.
Miriam Makeba – Pata Pata
Mama Africa (Makeba) was a huge inspiration for me, and as she says “every Friday and Saturday night, it’s Pata Pata time.” Listen to the woman!
Kasaav Music – Unwind Zouk
Not calypso but Zouk music! And these guys were the founders. It just keeps on going.
Baaba Mal – Mariama
I love many songs by Baaba Mal, this one is so beautiful. His voice and those harmonies!
Jupiter & Okwess International: Bapasi
My new favourite has to be…drumroll…Jupiter and Okwess International from Kushina! Yes, these guys got me dancing till my knee cracked Check them out live, they are awesome too.
