Top Ten: Giles Smith

Giles Smith - Feb 2013

Giles Smith spent the last two decades collecting, researching and absorbing all things music, with no intention to ever put a use to this passion. It wasn’t until 2000 that Giles began DJing and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact on the London party landscape, setting up secretsundaze the following year. Together with partner Jamie Priestley they are now responsible for one of the capital’s party institutions, being named Best Club Night by Timeout (in 2005) and Club of the Year by Mixmag (in 2006); a booking agency and label also spawned off the back of its success. Giles brings the same style and attention to detail when he DJs, both alongside secretsundaze’s star-studded list of guests and on his own in some of the world’s most renowned clubs. Before the next secretsundaze at Oval Space this weekend, we caught up with him to find out some sounds he’s into at the moment.

OSM x secretsundaze presents Kyle Hall, Paranoid London (live), L.B. Dub Corp, Giles Smith & Jamie Priestley, Sunday 27th July, Oval Space. Tickets still available here

1. Dario Zenker – WM2 (Trilogy Tapes)

Picked this up last week. The whole EP is heavy and I could have picked at least two others but you get WM2.

2. Nicuri – Moments (Mora Music)

Sick, dramatic atmospheric shizzle from the man like Nicuri.

3. Call Super – Depicta (Houndstooth)

Slick, tight and precise techno from UK’s Call Super.

4. Fred P – Circuits (Finale Sessions)

Fred turns it out with this acid flecked hypnotic jam.

5. Dana Ruh – Train Ride To You (Underground Quality)

My buddy Patrice Scott dropped this at the secretsundaze party at our Sonar this year. Label boss Jus-Ed was in the booth too. Mayhem ensued. Lovely serene late night stuff from Berlin’s Dana Ruh.

6. Sandman and Riverside – Into Your Story (Kai Alcé Remix)

Been championing this for months now and it finally seems to be getting the attention it deserves. Stunning remix from Kai Alcé.

7. Rotary – Sterac (Klockworks)

Sterac on Klockworks, what more do you need? So much tension in this.

8. Steffi and Dexter – Rosser (Dolly)

Typical badass breakbeat business form the mighty Dexter and Steffi.

9. Cristi Cons – Anatrack (Meander)

Trippy hypnotic, tracky business from Romanian Cristi Cons.

10. Aardvark – Plus Det (Skudge)

Aardvark is an amazing producer and can turn his hand to so many styles. This one is a Detroit leaning pumper.
