Top Five: Mumdance – Soca Selection for Mancester Carnival

Since being discovered by Diplo back in 2008 via a bootleg remix of the Black Lips’ Veni Vedi Vici (featuring Grime MC Jammer), Mumdance a.k.a Jack Adams has been making a name for himself by constantly being at the forefront of electronic music. The Brighton-based producer began his musical career strongly influenced by the 8-bar grime productions of early Wiley, DJ Oddz, and Ruff Sqwad. He released one collaborative EP with Trim on No Hats No Hoods Recordings, followed by a more world inspired electronic cross-over EP on Mad Decent which in turn led to two world tours. We highly recommend listening to both.

Jack’s eclectic discography has seen releases on an astonishing list of labels, from Tectonic, Mad Decent, Keysound and Greco Roman to Trouble and Bass, Southern Fried and Hyperdub. His most recent release – the heavy-hitter 3-track EP Take Time – is now out on Rinse which you can listen to and cop here.

In the run up to Manchester Carnival this weekend, we got the UK producer to pick out his top five Soca tunes, ‘dem caribbean vibes that zap the carnival alive and make the Red Stripe taste better. Listen to the playlist below as Mumdance takes us through each track one by one (plus a few bonus songs chucked in for good measure).

Mumdance plays the Red Bull Music Academy stage at Manchester Carnival on Saturday 19th July, and has been chosen as a participant in this year’s Academy in Tokyo. Find out more at

Zoelah – Wine Up On Me

One of my all time fav soca tunes, it’s one of those tracks that just takes me back to a certain time of my life every time I hear it. There is a really good live version of this track at the International Soca Monarch  (online here). It’s about 8 minutes long and really, really epic.

Machel Montano – Jumbie

I used to hammer this tune when I was touring with Major Lazer back in the day. Machel Montano is one of my favourite Soca artists & I was lucky enough to see him play at a Red Bull Carnival party a few years back. He didn’t disappoint.

Fay-Ann Lyons – Done D Party (Oil Stain Riddim)

Fay-Ann Lyons is an artist that I only recently discovered just through Youtube surfing, I really like her vocal on this track and the delivery is on point. Looking forward to hearing more from her.

Swappi – Bucket

This track was massive a couple of years back & I still love it to this day. Swappi absolutely smashed it, the tone of the vocal & the hook is super euphoric.  Out to Jillionaire for bringing this one to my attention & generally keeping me up to date with whats happening on the islands

Silverlink ft Jammer & Badness – Message is Love

This track was massive back when I was first breaking through as a DJ and is one of the first (if not only?) Grime / Soca crossovers, Jammer, Badness & I used to tour a lot together a few years back and playing this track was always a highlight of the set.

*Chutney Soca Bonus Round*

Ravi B – Bread

The hook of this is so weird hahahaha. Ravi B always comes with the bangers, see also “Ah Drinka”

Arti & Zoelah – Wine Up On Me (Chutney Remix)

Finishing where we began, this is the Chutney remix of wine up on me, listening to it now, I think its actually my favourite version over the original version. massive track.
