It’s only half way through 2014 and already, Sorceress have got us thinking about our end of year list with their debut album Dose. The New Zealand five-piece, formerly called Funkommunity, have put together a quite sensational long player, oozing with soul but injected with strong, bass-driven, dancefloor rhythms. Production from Isaac Aesilli, the seductive vocals of Rachel Fraser and impressive musicianship from the rest of the band come together to form a well-oiled future soul machine, making them one of our favourite new bands at the moment.
After allowing us to stream a track from the album last week (see below), we invited Sorceress to curate this week’s Monday Morning Mixtape. Isaac has pulled together some favourites from the band including Kelela, James Blake, Fatima, Taylor McFerrin, Solomon Burke, some classic Ashanti and more. Below are a few words from Isaac and Rachel about their choices, before you jump in.

The mix was recorded recently on a rainy winter day in Christchurch, New Zealand from a selection of songs from myself and three members of the band: Rachel Fraser (Vocalist), Marika Hodgson (Bass), and Tom Broome (Drums). The idea was to show a spectrum of music from the band that is related to Sorceress and our album Dose. It gives an insight into what we like to listen to. This mix is for listening/chilling and so it contains tracks from the slower and more soulful side of our taste. For me the standout track is Florasia by Taylor McFerrin, currently my new favourite song because it’s so lush!
From Rachel Fraser:
I love 60’s soul music. Solomon Burke (King Solomon) If You Need is a favorite. Sounds so rich. I don’t really know how to explain it but it inspires me. Kelela is a regular on my personal playlists. She sounds like a sweet memory and she’s got some dope producers! It’s almost as if this song reminds you that there’s a time and place for everything.
