In the two years since they started, Shapes have really carved out their own unique place in Bristol. Seemingly not tied to one particular venue or even one restrictive musical sub-genre, Shapes have been booking first class artists from the world of house and techno since their first party.
In just over a week, on Good Friday, they are putting together a party that has been long overdue over here in the West. Many times have residents at Berghain and Panorama Bar graced our ears in Bristol, but certainly never on this scale and certainly not all together. Billed as an Ostgut Ton label showcase, any real techno fan should be wetting their knickers with excitement at the artists that are coming to our doorstep. Marcel Dettmann is evidently a force to be reckoned, having played the justly hallowed main room at Berghain as a resident since it’s inception, and having penned the first record on Ostgut with his long-term friend Ben Klock. Dawning was released in 2006 and brilliantly encapsulates the sound that characterises the whole label in its calm and measured, yet assertive nature.
Ostgut Ton’s techno is not the fistpump brand, it’s about powerful music with strong beats and precise percussion made to fit perfectly into the dark and industrial environment they have created at Berghain. Joining Dettmann is label boss Nick Höppner and a live set from Tobias Freund, alongside Anthony Parasole, Ryan Elliot and the always solid Shapes residents. For some listening homework we suggest Dettmann’s last solo album (Dettmann II) or the hypnotic beats of the latest record on the label (‘A Series Of Shocks’ by Tobias.). As far as techno nights go, this has potential to be extremely special!
