To say that William Onyeabor was one of the breakthrough artists of 2013 seems quite a strange notion, given that his only active period as a musician was 1978-85. He now spends his days practicing as a priest and living in a mansion deep in the Nigerian countryside, away from the spotlight that now shines brighter than it ever has before. The responsibility for that goes to Luaka Bop, the label of David Byrne (Talking Heads), who released the Who Is William Onyeabor? compilation in 2013.
Drawing together the best of Onyeabor’s rare and pioneering Synth-Funk productions, Luaka Bop’s efforts built on the cult following he’d unwittingly generated among crate-diggers and DJs. The critically acclaimed album and finally made his music accessible to the vast number who’d been swept up by the infectious energy of his music, and picked up many new fans along the way.
In 2014, momentum keeps building. You Need To Hear This recently premiered Fantastic Man, a documentary which tells the five-year story of Luaka Bop’s efforts to track down the illusive man and uncover his mysterious past. In addition, two very special live dates have been arranged for London and Bristol. Unfortunately Onyeabor himself won’t be appearing, but some special guests and famous fans will be: Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Sinkane and more very special guests to be announced.
