We were re-reminded of this track and video when recently reading a top ten list of 2013 ‘Music Videos that actually pushed feminism forwards’, a reaction to Lily Allen’s recent attempt. I’m Not Dancing is a subtle yet totally captivating video that focused up-front on the artist without seemingly reducing her to mere sexualised body parts. Who is this laid-back ‘ultimate fighter’ you might wonder? Tirzah is a London fashion grad who has recently released her debut EP on Greco Roman, made in conjunction with close friend and maestro of weird and addictive experimental dance-pop, Micachu. She’s a firm favourite of ours, thanks to her projects with Micachu & the Shapes and Kwes, so it’s great to hear her imprint on Tirzah’s tracks. She’s taken Tirzah’s casually soulful and libertarian vocals and produced a truly innovative EP, tinged with garage and R&B. At just over ten minutes long, it’s already got us in line for more.
