Overhearing your housemate’s music playing can be a tad annoying. Not so when you’re scrambling into her room to find out just WHAT that record is she’s playing.
Turns out it was Canadian artist Jessy Lanza who had me tripping over myself and making me melt with her majestic take on R&B. Her debut album Pull My Hair Back has just been released on Kode9’s ever-diversifying label, Hyperdub. A seductive album comprising of nine totally mesmerising songs. Together with co-producer Jeremy Greenspan, Lanza has explored her impressive musicality and voice in an unrushed and fine-tuned way. Be it with the meandering R&B track Kathy Lee, the funked-up groove of Keep on Moving or the stargazing, first-love-make-out-music title track Pull My Hair Back. Jessy Lanza has us utterly captivated.
Jessy Lanza will make her UK debut later this month alongside Kode9, Kyle Hall and Ikonika, for The Hydra presents Hyperdub at XOYO.
