After giving you a sneak preview of their mixtape in their City Guide before the weekend, here’s the Monday morning selection from John Wizards. If you’re yet to come across John Wizards their self-titled debut album on Planet Mu is a remarkable collection of pan-global sounds, touching on dub reggae, R&B, classical, jazz, African dance music, electro-pop, folk and rumba. It’s won them fans from Gilles Peterson, who hosted them this week on his 6Music show, and Mount Kimbie, who offered them a support slot on their upcoming European tour.
We’re delighted to have them curate MMM011, with frontman John Withers picking out a load of songs to accompany his guide to Cape Town last week. We’re not embarrassed to say that we only recognised one song here so we hope it’s as much a journey of discovery for you. Expect some jazz, a sprinkling of soul, plenty of sounds from Africa, and songs from Rhye, Shuggie Otis and Tatsuo Yamashita. For the full tracklist, follow us on Soundcloud for updates when it gets put up later this week.
We’re giving away two tickets to see John Wizards at Jazz Cafe this week supporting Owiny Sigoma Band, plus a copy of OSB’s latest album. Competition ends tomorrow, with more info here. You can also catch the Wizards at The Southbank Centre on 8th November.
